Dr Julian Sandell. MB BS, MECPI, FRCPCH, FRCEM
Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Poole Hospital NHS Trust.
Dr Sandell trained in London and has been a consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine since 2003. He has extensive knowledge and experience of General Paediatrics and Paediatric Emergency Medicine. He is employed by Poole Hospital, Dorset, as their paediatric clinical lead for Emergency Medicine and High Dependency Care.
He has published articles in the Lancet, the Journal of Pre-hospital and Disaster Medicine, Trauma, the EMJ and the BMJ, he has writen postgraduate chapters on "Paediatric Emergency Medicine” and the “Prehospital Management of the Paediatric Patient” published by Oxford University Press and BMJ Publications respectively.
He is involved in the design and use of Paediatric Early Warning Scores, having designed the COAST score (the Children’s Observation And Severity Tool). He has spoken regularly at medical conferences both in the UK and internationally. He instructs and directs Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS) Courses. He contributed to the Department of Health DVD project "Spotting The Sick Child" and also co-authored the Joint Royal College’s Ambulance Liaison Committee’s (JRCALC) 2006 and 2013 Paediatric Guidelines for the UK Ambulance Service's Clinical Practice Guidelines.
He has an additional interest in the field of Prehospital Paediatrics and, through his ongoing involvement with the UK's Ambulance Service, designed and developed the SandellTapeÔ Emergency Paediatric Chart in 2007, detailing prehospital paediatric resuscitation and emergency care practices. This product is endorsed by JRCALC and is commercially available.
As well as RCPCH (Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health) commitments with JRCLAC, he is on the Intercollegiate Committee for Standards for Children and Young People in Emergency Settings and also on ALSG’s APLS Working Group.
