Mr Barry Seemungal BSc MBBCh PhD FRCP

Consultant Neurologist and Neuro-otologist, St Mary's and Charing Cross Hospitals, London

Dr Barry Seemungal is a consultant neurologist and neuro-otologist at St Mary's and Charing Cross Hospitals and senior lecturer at Imperial College London.

He is an expert in dizziness and balance, and sees patients with disorders of the inner ear balance organs, eye movement conditions including nystagmus (e.g. from stroke, multiple sclerosis or degenerative brain disorders) and balance problems arising from ataxia and/or traumatic brain injury. He applies cutting edge research to developing new patient therapy.

He is a member of the International expert working group that published the first classification for vestibular migraine, a watershed in advancing new therapy for these patients. He is a registered expert on the European Research and Innovation database and has provided expert review of the UK NICE guidelines for managing dizzy diagnoses. More recently he has chaired a European conference on Brain Plasticity in the Vestibular system (‘FENS’ Satellite conference – 2014).

He is strongly committed to educating healthcare professionals about managing dizziness and has lectured widely both in the UK and abroad, including masterclasses on managing dizziness such as at the Royal College of Physicians in London and at European Neurological meetings.

He trained as a neurologist in London and completed a PhD in vestibular neurosciences at the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London. He continues to research into the brain mechanisms of vestibular function in health and disease.

He recently senior authored a publication that provided the first demonstration of the brain regions involved in suppressing dizziness, an important stepping stone to developing novel therapy for patients with chronic dizziness. At St Mary's Hospital he provides an daily acute vertigo service as well as daily expert review of acute head injury patients to the Major Trauma Unit.
