Mr Kostas Papagiannopoulos. MMED THORAX, MD (Cth).

Senior Consultant Thoracic Surgeon, St James's University Hospital

Mr. Kostas Papagiannopoulos did all his initial schooling and Primary Medical studies in Greece. He qualified as a medical Doctor in 1990. He spent 8 years in South Africa, Cape Town where he finished his training in Cardiothoracic Surgery and developed a specific interest in Pathology of the Lungs and esophagus.

He spent over a year in Royal Brompton Hospital working mainly with Prof. Peter Goldstraw in Thoracic Surgery further refining his experience in Thoracic Surgery. During this time he had the opportunity to publish in International Journals and present in International conferences. He further pursued experience in the Belgian ground working with Professor Tony Lerut who has been an authority in the management of esophageal cancer.

He left Belgium in 2001 and since then he has been successfully appointed as a consultant Thoracic surgeon in Leeds General Infirmary and then at St. James’s University Hospital. He has also received an Honorary Senior Lecturer’s contract through the University of Leeds. He has also been appointed as Clinical Director of Thoracic Department in Leeds for 6 years and held the Chair’s position in the Thoracic group in Yorkshire Cancer Network between 2006-2008. He has published in international Journals and presented in conferences at National and International Level.

Since 2008 he has served in the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons as a councillor and since 2009 he has been elected as the Treasurer of the Society and an officer. He is also the Treasurer of the Hellenic Society of Leeds UK.
