Mrs Shelia OkoraforIkechukwu BSc (Hons), ENB, MSc

Senior Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner, Homerton Hospital, London

Mrs Okorafor-Ikechukwu is a senior Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (ANNP) currently working on the middle grade rota at the Homerton Hospital London. She trained as a paediatric nurse at the Nightingale Institute Kings College qualifying in 1997.

Since qualifying,  she has specialized in neonatal nursing, all of which has been in tertiary units. Her career to date has covered most of the specialist areas in neonatology including cardiac, renal, surgical and neonatal transport.

In 2005 she trained as the 1st ANNP at the Royal London hospital. She is a dynamic and dedicated practitioner with extensive experience, training, and clinical exposure in neonatology. She was one of the first ANNP’s on the London Neonatal Transfer Service hence paving the way for other ANNP’s to lead transfer on NTS. Her role was working autonomously on the middle grade rota providing acute management involving high risk babies and ensuring safe transfer of sick neonates from all over the country in collobaration with the consultant on call. She has participated in numerous audits.

The ANNP’s role is very diverse, bridging the professional and clinical boundaries between nursing and medical care. As an ANNP she has a thorough knowledge of advanced clinical practice, practicing both autonomously and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team under the clinical leadership of the consultant.

She is a Resuscitation council Newborn Life Support Instructor, simulation facilitator and an independent nurse prescriber. Currently, she is one of  team looking at minimizing central line sepsis and insertion of central lines.
